Manassen rukous / The Prayer of Manasseh

Manassen rukous on osa luterilaisen kirkon Vanhan testamentin apokryfikirjoja. Se on liiteosana roomalais-katolilaisten Raamatussa, kanoninen asema sillä on ortodoksisessa kirkossa. Rukous on muodostonut minulle hyvin rakkaaksi sen myötä, kun apokryfikirjojen uusi suomennos ilmestyi viime vuonna. Toivoisin, että mahdollisimman moni saisi itselleen apokryfit sisältävän Raamatun. Ne ovat hyvää luettavaa. Haluan jakaa tämän rukouksen kanssanne.

The Prayer of Manasseh is a part of the apocryphal books of the Old Testament in the Lutheran Bible. It is appended to the Roman Catholic Bible, and it is part of the deuterocanonical books in the Orthodox Church. The Prayer has become very dear to me after a new Finnish translation of the apocryphal books was published last year. I would hope that as many people as possible would have a Bible with the apocryphal books in them. They are good to read. I would like to share this Prayer with you: http://bible.oremus.org/?ql=26864532

1 Herra, Kaikkivaltias,
meidän isiemme Abrahamin, Iisakin ja Jaakobin
ja heidän vanhurskaiden jälkeläistensä Jumala!
2 Sinä olet luonut taivaan ja maan,
niiden kaiken kauneuden ja järjestyksen.
3 Sinä kahlitsit meren sanallasi,
sinä suljit syvyyden ja sinetöit sen
pelottavalla, kunnioittavalla sanallasi.
4 Sinun mahtisi edessä
jokainen vapisee ja säikkyy,
5 sillä sinun voimaasi ja kirkkauttasi
ei voi kukaan vastustaa.
Vihaasi, jolla uhkaat syntisiä,
ei kukaan kestä.
6 Mutta mittaamaton, käsittämättömän suuri
on myös armo, jonka olet luvannut.
7 Sinä olet Herra, sinä ole Korkein,
lempeä, pitkämielinen ja täynnä armoa.
Sinä voit muuttaa mielesi,
peruuttaa määräämäsi rangaistuksen.

[Herra, sinä olet hyvä ja lempeä.
Niille, jotka tekevät syntiä sinua vastaan,
olet luvannut, että he voivat kääntyä
ja saada sinulta anteeksiannon.
Suuri on armosi. Sinä olet päättänyt,
että syntinen voi kääntyä ja pelastua.]

8 Herra, vanhurskaiden Jumala!
Et sinä vanhurskailta vaatinut kääntymystä -
eiväthän Abraham, Iisak ja Jaakob tehneet syntiä sinua vastaan.
Minulle, syntiselle, sinä annoit mahdollisuuden kääntyä,
9 sillä syntejä, joihin olen syyllistynyt,
on enemmän kuin meressä hiekanjyviä.
Herra, usein olen rikkonut, hyvin usein,
niin paljon olen tehnyt vääriä tekoja,
etten ole arvollinen nostamaan silmiäni
ja katsomaan taivaan korkeuteen.
10 Raskaat rautakahleet painavat minut kumaraan,
syntieni tähden virun hylättynä
enkä saa lievitystä,
koska sytytin sinun vihasi.
Tein sitä, mikä on väärää sinun silmissäsi:
pystytin vieraiden jumalien kuvia
ja annoin niille iljetyksille yhä enemmän sijaa.

11 Nyt painun sydämessäni polvilleni
ja rukoilen, että osoitat laupeutesi.
12 Olen tehnyt syntiä, Herra, olen tehnyt syntiä
ja tiedän rikkoneeni lain.
13 Minä rukoilen sinua, minä pyydän:
anna anteeksi, Herra, anna anteeksi!

Älä anna minun tuhoutua rikkomuksiini,
älä iäti vihaa, älä pidä muistissa pahuuttani
äläkä tuomitse minua maan syvyyksiin -
sinä, Herra, olet katuvien Jumala!
14 Osoitat hyvyytesi siinä mitä minulle teet:
suuressa armossasi pelastat minut,
vaikka en sitä ansaitse.
15 Niin kauan kuin elän, kiitän sinua.
Sinun ylistystäsi laulavat kaikki taivaan joukot,
sinun on kunnia ikuisesti. Aamen.

  1. I became fond of parts of the Apocrypha when I bought some cassette recordings of Laurence Olivier reading the Bible (all Old Testament and Apocrypha). Here are a couple of audio portions from YouTube:

I wonder whether Luther's doctrine of vocation is compatible with the latter clip from Ecclesiasticus. Or whether perhaps he held it in a form that was compatible.

In any case, Olivier has jaded me on most other readers.

  2. I think Luther's view on vocation is compatible with that passage from the 38th chapter of Ecclesiasticus. According to Luther, there were basically three estates: the ruler, the worker and the pastor. All of them are for the good of society, including the worker: "But they will maintain the state of the world, and all their desire is in the work of their craft." (Eccl. 38:34) Unlike the Anabaptists of his day, Luther believed in the office of the pastor - which means it is a job. Many Penatacostals to this day do not pay their pastors. But compare: "The wisdom of a learned man cometh by opportunity of leisure" (Eccl. 38:24). Luther also empahsized the importance of theological training for pastors: "But he that giveth his mind to the law of the most High, and is occupied in the meditation thereof, will seek out the wisdom of all the ancient, and be occupied in prophecies." (Eccl. 39:1)

  3. I do like that. I had a professor once who spoke a lot about vocation, but had no use for Josef Pieper's book Leisure, The Basis of Culture. But this professor's ideas of vocation came from the Reformed tradition, rather than the Lutheran.
