Apostolien päivä | Feast of the Apostles

Päivän evankeliumi (Matt. 16: 13-19)

The Gospel Reading (Matthew 16: 13-19)

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’
And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’

And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.’

Saarna apostolien päivänä 20.7.2014
Helsingin vanhassa kirkossa, pastori Petri Tikka

Rakkaat ystävät, tänään on apostolien päivä, uskon lähettiläiden päivä. On olemassa ilmoitus, jonka Isä ilmoitti apostoli Pietarille. Se ilmoitus on usko. Usko Jeesukseen on ilmoitusta. Usko on Jumalan lahja.
Usko Jeesukseen on ilmaista, maksutonta, ilman sanoman kuulijoille asetettuja ennakkoehtoja.

Kuulemisessa on kaikki. Yksinkertaista! Ja vieläpä:

”Heidän äänensä on kaikunut kaikkialle,
heidän sanansa maan ääriin asti. (Room. 10: 18)”

Näin on sanonut apostoli Paavali kirjeessään Rooman kristilliselle seurakunnalle.
: ”Taivaat julistavat Jumalan kunniaa, taivaankansi kertoo hänen teoistaan.

Jeesuksen Kristuksen todistajien ketju on säilynyt aposteleista tähän päivään asti. Ilosanoma on osoittanut sisäsyntyistä pätevyyttään kantautuessaan sukupolvelta toiselle. Tämäkin on lahjaa: uskon perintö.

Jumala on kokenut pienen ihmisen kohtalon, hylätyksi tulemisen, täydellisen yksinäisyyden.

Tästä osallisia olivat apostolit. He hylkäsivät pelossaan ja heikkoudessaan Jeesuksen Getsemanen puutarhaan vangittavaksi.

(1. Joh. 5: 4-5) Tunnustakaamme apostolinen usko kokonaisuudessaan Nikean uskontunnustuksen mukaan. Se löytyy virsikirjan viimeiseltä aukeamalta.

Sermon on the Feast of the Apostles
July 20th AD 2014, in the Old Church of Helsinki
Rev. Petri Tikka

Dear friends, today is the Feast of the Apostles, the day for commemorating the messengers of faith. There is a revelation that the Father revealed to Apostle Peter. That revelation is faith. Faith in Jesus is something that is proclaimed. Faith is the gift of God. Today I want us to be especially closely aware of this:

Faith - and everything that is related to getting faith - is wholly and completely a gift. Receiving faith may be steady existence, peaceful growth or quick change. However we have experienced the influence of faith as individuals in the different stages of our lives, the Gospel concerning Jesus is the same, public and common. The Good News is general knowledge, publicly taught in the world and through the Church. Faith in Jesus is free, free of charge indeed, without prerequisites for those who hear the message.

The love of Christ, encompassing all, has enlightened our understanding to the degree that we have felt our need to be nourished by common faith - together on the Sunday morning. Nevertheless, Gospel, the message of Christianity, is not the possession of only those, of us, to whom it has become dear and whose life it has decisively changed. We realize that we do not cope alone, with our own strength, but have received so much. That is why it is more than possible to admit: freed by faith we can decide all, but decisions do not win us faith. Because faith in our Saviour is a gift, something else than our own decision is essentially decisive in getting faith. The Gospel comes to the ear and travels to heart. Everything is in the hearing. Simple! And more:

"Their voice has gone out to all the earth,

and their words to the ends of the world." (Romans 10: 18)

So said the Apostle Paul in his epistle to the Christian congregation of Rome. The Good News is joyous news, a new and freeing thing for the human mind. However, the Gospel is not an external statement that is pushed to others as a new framework, strange to ordinary life. No human being in the world is outside the bearing of the Gospel. The Apostle's statement - about a voice that has gone out to all the earth - is based on David's psalm 19, sung so: "
The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours forth speech and night to night declares knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard; yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world." (Ps 19: 1-4) In the movements of the furthest galaxies and the smallest subatomic particles, that is, in everything and everywhere there is a living, positively singing force. The very framework of existence speaks of life that is more than death. The living voice of Creation is directed towards Jesus who defeated death with His death and brought forth life and incorruptibility.

To the ear of some or another religious speech like this may sound abstract and distant. Far from it! The force of the life of Christ is felt in most real situations and crises. The birth of a child wakes one up to see the Creator. When everything comes apart, the reality of the incarnate, co-suffering God becomes is pointed out. There is historical, factual knowledge that coincides with the cry of our deepest sensibility. This tradition of knowledge is based on experiences that happened to people in Israel very long ago. The Apostles saw Jesus dead and risen again. The chain of the witnesses of Jesus Christ has abided all the way from the Apostles up to this day. The Good News has shown its inborn validity in being borne from generation to generation. This, too, is a gift: the heritage of faith.

The continuance of the chain of witnesses is illustrated also by the fact that the Gospel has been preached from this pulpit already in the Church of Ulrika Eleonora (in the place that is known today as the Senate Square of Helsinki) in the 1700's. The chain of the servants of the Lord is pictured in this pulpit by two Apostles: in the front - St. Paul, the Apostle to the gentiles; in the back - St. John the Evangelist, the nearest associate of Jesus. In the middle there is Christ Himself, with the globe in His hands. The Bible is also an enduring witness of faith - the entirety of which appeared in Finnish translation on this date (July 20th) in AD 1642.

The heritage of faith got under way precisely with the Apostles, down to numerous books in the Bible and preaching Christ Jesus. As a word, "Apostle" means: one who is sent. The office of the Apostle has carried on to this day in the form of the office of the Bishop. The Apostles were eye witnesses to the salvific actions of God, so the mission of public witnessing fell on them first. This same mission is performed by the Bishops, as they ensure with their office that the full, unspoiled Gospel is preached in the parishes. A Bishop has also ordained myself and Arto here as pastors - to proclaim the Gospel. The office of the Pastor exists so that the Good News would be a common and public thing. In addition, there exists the Diaconate for the realization of the Gospel in serving those who are weakest. The offices of the Bishop, the Pastor and the Deacon are for the Gospel and its full proclamation. This serves the function of the faith as common to all, public and universal - that is, the faith as a message that is given as a gift.

As Church, you and I exists precisely for the function of faith as a gift that pertains all in like manner. The foundation of the Church is gift-faith. The Apostle Peter said to Jesus:
‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ The witness of Peter, upon which the Church is built, was not the individual's own decision, nor invention. Peter believed that God's age-old promise for the Messiah was fulfilled in this very person whom he knew and with whom he went. The bearing of the Gospel is in fact this, that God is near us humans, nearer to us than we are to ourselves. God has experienced the humble fortunes of humanity, being forsaken, total desolation.

The Apostles were partakers in this. Due to their fear and weakness, they forsook Jesus for imprisonment in the Garden of Gethsemane. But they themselves got to feel the force of the Office of the Keys which had been given to them. The power of the Keys is that every human being can proclaim to another total forgiveness. This was first done by Christ. He proclaimed forgiveness from the Cross to all those who had taken and abandoned him for crucifixion. A new age began from the Cross. You, also, can proclaim the following to another human being who has done wrong, who thirsts for freedom (also concerning a thing that does not involve the relationship of you two): everything is forgiven. The power of the Keys, Absolution, is indeed also a public Office that is used by pastors for the benefit of all publicly, commonly and privately.

Hearing the Apostolic voice gives one faith, an assurance that endures. That voice is the voice of forgiveness. That voice is the voice that frees. That voice unleashes abundant and full life among us.
Faith - and everything that is related to getting faith - is wholly and completely a gift. Look: that's it - Jesus died for you. Precisely in this word that I proclaim to you (and which you are reading on my blog!) there is faith itself. The life and the force is now, right here: you are forgiven everything. Nothing binds you - not the whole world itself. As a servant of Christ, I proclaim to you liberation. In this forgiveness, given to us, in this is the common faith, by the word of an Apostle: "And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?" (1 John 5: 4-5) Let us confess our Apostolic faith in its totality with the Nicene Creed.
